Clergy Call: Support Movement to Reform Health Care!To the New York State Congressional Delegation, As leaders of people of faith in cities, towns, villages and communities throughout New York State, we represent thousands of New Yorkers. Today we write to you to show our support for the movement to reform the healthcare system in this country. We are deeply pained to see our congregants forced to make very tough choices in order to find and pay for the healthcare they need. In many cases their critical needs are not met. We are also saddened to see our community hospitals fighting to stay afloat without the resources to provide high quality care. During this deep recession, more and more families struggle with the loss of jobs and healthcare and the holes in our social safety net continue to grow. Our economic crisis has shed a clear light on the urgent need for real healthcare reform. We believe that healthcare reform is a moral issue of the greatest importance to the well-being of the congregations that we serve and today we ask you to serve as passionate leaders in the effort to bring about real change through national healthcare reform. Despite the difficulties facing our state and our nation, it is also a time of great opportunity. Please stand up for our communities as champions for quality healthcare that is available to all.The cost of improving the lives of our citizens through assuring access to affordable, quality healthcare should be shared by employers, insurers, individuals and the government. Finding real solutions requires the cooperation of diverse, bipartisan groups willing to work together for change. We need your strong leadership to make healthcare reform a reality.
